Creating an Evidence Log

Creating an Evidence Log

Abuse can be a short or long term series of incidents. A victim of stalking for example will have experienced on average a 100 incidents before reporting it to the police.

It is really helpful for both victims and the police to create an evidence log. This is a sheet that briefly explains the abuse that has taken place. It allows police or those working with you to get a quick overview of what is happening and also it helps to demonstrate that there is a pattern of abusive behaviour.

In addition to the log sheet, you can also have specific incident pages where you record in more detail what has happend, what action was taken, did it help or did it cause the behaviour to get worse. It is also useful to print off any text messages, screen shots, photo etc to keep with the incident sheets.

The better your information and evidence the easier for the police to determine if a crime has been committed and what laws might apply.

When it comes to abuse many laws can apply including laws on:

  • Domestic abuse
  • Harassment
  • Stalking
  • Hate crime
  • Assault
  • Criminal damage
  • Threats to kill
  • Revenge porn
  • Many more
